The nation of Australia is a blessed land. We live under a birthright prophesied over us more than 400 years ago that forged a future of freedom and blessing. Those words have power to this day and it is a crucial time in history for Australians to rise up, connect with this prophecy and recapture our birthright.

A birthright is a privilege or right given to a person, which they are entitled to by birth. Spiritually speaking, a birthright is a specific blessing of God passed through generations. The blessing that begins with one generation doesn’t end there, but is passed on to the next, directing a person’s future as a link in the chain of the broader God-given destiny of a family or nation.

We see this clearly in scripture with the nation of Israel, which began with a powerful covenant forged between Abraham and God, passed down to the second and third generations, Isaac and Jacob, then bestowed upon the 12 sons of Jacob who became the 12 tribes of Israel.

There is a powerful birthright over the land of Australia and God is wanting it to transfer to a new generation with the heart to rise up and apprehend it. Australia and the neighbouring nations of the Pacific have a specific God-given calling. From the very first sighting of these great southern lands by the Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandez de Quiros in 1606, the emblem of the cross was planted in the ground and the record of history forever displays the prophecy that this Pacific region, from the islands to the south pole, were dedicated to the Lord Jesus Christ. De Quiros then picked up the heart of God for our nation and its future and called this land “Terra Australis Espiritu del Santo”, which means “Great Southland of the Holy Spirit”. In this name is the powerful prophetic destiny God has for this region.

“If we respond to God accurately during times of shaking, we can be positioned to receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken” (Heb 12:27-28)

In the 1920s it is said that world renowned revivalist Smith Wigglesworth built on that prophetic word while ministering in Australia. It is believed that he spoke about an incredible last days revival that would come from Australia and touch the nations of the world. There is some contention about whether Wigglesworth truly spoke this prophecy. Whether he did or didn’t, I believe is irrelevant, because this undoubtedly remains the legacy in our name and the destiny of our nation.

I can understand people becoming totally disheartened by what we see unfold in our nation at the moment. But what Australia is going through right now is the birth pangs described in Romans 8 that precede the revealing of the sons and daughters of God. We must set our eyes not on what is happening in the natural, but what is happening behind the scenes in the spirit. It was Wigglesworth himself who declared the powerful truth, “I am not moved by what I see or by what I feel, only what I believe”.

God is causing a new people to arise who will lay hold of this nation’s birthright and cause a new day to dawn over Australia (Isaiah 60:1). The first move of God began in the upper room in Jerusalem, but I believe the last move will come out of this Oceania region and God is going to bless the nations of the earth through it.

”Our nation’s birthright is of the greatest worth. It may have been forgotten and lost in generations past, but it can be revived in this generation.”

A Prophetic Call and Generational Promise

A birthright is a prophetic call and a generational promise. It is more than a natural inheritance. It is not just the passing down of money or land, although that could be a part of it. A birthright is the precious deposit of God transferred through covenant and placed on the inside of a person’s heart that equips them with the grace they need to fulfil their destiny and provide a launching pad to the generation after them.

In Genesis 12 God calls Abram out of his homeland to make a covenant with him. God promises to bless him, make him a great nation, and declares that through him all the families of the earth will be blessed. At that time the patriarch’s name was Abram, but through the divine process at work in his life the very nature of God came into Abram’s being and his name was changed to Abraham. This reflected Abram and the Great I Am becoming one through the power of covenant.

Covenant and the blessing attached to it is generational. God doesn’t intend for what He began in one generation to die with that generation, but to be passed on to the next, continuing His plans and purposes on the earth. The blessing of Abraham was passed on to his son Isaac. Isaac’s firstborn son Esau was the legal recipient of everything God had given to his forefathers, yet he didn’t value the birthright as his father and grandfather did. His twin brother Jacob did.

In Genesis 25:29 Jacob deceives Esau out of his birthright. Although this is an underhanded act, Esau’s swift willingness to trade the invaluable promise of God given to his forefathers is what is ultimately despised by God. Esau was the full beneficiary of the covenant, but because of his own human priorities, he sold it for as little as a pot of stew.

We can live with the maximum benefits of God’s promises in one generation and they can be lost in the next. This is a great tragedy. If the story of Jacob and Esau teaches us anything, it’s that our nation’s birthright is of the greatest worth. It may have been forgotten and lost in generations passed, but it can be revived in this generation. Anyone who is willing to respond to the call of God can lay hold of this birthright afresh so what God began in our nation more than 400 years ago is secured.

Awakening the Church

Matthew 13:25 describes the kingdom of heaven being like a man who sowed good seed in his field, “but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat…” The prophetic words spoken over our nation are the good seeds that encapsulate our birthright and hold the promises of God for our future. But over the last 30 to 40 years many Christians have been spiritually asleep, generations have forgotten this heritage and the enemy has sown tares to corrupt the history, identity and destiny of this nation. While the Church has slept, many deceptive ideologies have arisen in the last decade that have compromised the basic rights, freedoms, values and institutions this nation was founded upon.

For the Church in our nation to be awakened, we must allow God to deal with lukewarmth. In the Book of Revelation Jesus refers to the Laodecian church as the lukewarm church. Lukewarmth is a mixture of hot and cold and it symbolises the priority of human comfort that compromises on God. This was also the root problem in Esau’s heart. The Bible describes that God despises both.

Our birthright is the greatest gift God has given our nation and those who follow Christ are called to be the custodians of this blessing. Lukewarmth and compromise will cause us to let go of this precious gift in pursuit of our own human endeavours. This is easy to do in an environment of comfort in a land of peace and prosperity. But things are rapidly changing, and in many cases, failing.

Through this global pandemic God is allowing a shaking. Shaking exposes what is of God and what is not. Things that are man-made fall away, and the things that cannot be shaken remain. If we respond to God accurately during times of shaking, we can be positioned to receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken (Heb 12:27-28).

I believe this is a season where the Church is being powerfully realigned, its priorities reset and it is being repositioned for an awakening that will usher His Kingdom into this nation. God raised up Jacob because Esau was not willing to fight for his birthright, to contend for that which is unseen. I am determined to allow God to deal with any lukewarm, compromising areas of my life and the life of our church so we can receive this incredible birthright, because the future of this nation could depend on it.

Jesus said, “I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it”. Wherever God is building His Church, it cannot be stopped. He is using this shaking to awaken us and cause us to rise up to lay hold of our birthright. God raised up Jacob and used him, even through his faults, because Esau was not willing to fight for his birthright. He wasn’t willing to contend for that which was unseen.

Right now, this nation is in the valley of decision. God wants His nation back. He wants to restore it to being the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit it was always called to be. He also wants His Church back, His cities back, the streets back and homes back. This is the only sure pathway for restoration left for this nation, and His Church needs to lead the way because the only true agent of change and healing is His Church.

”While the Church has slept, many deceptive ideologies have arisen in the last decade that have compromised the basic rights, freedoms, values and institutions this nation was founded upon.”

If you would like to take the step of inviting Jesus into your heart and receiving His birthright over your life, I would encourage you to pray the following prayer and make contact with our church or a local church near you that can help you on your journey:

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to you in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my sins. I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is your Son, and that He died on the cross of Calvary that I might be forgiven and have eternal life in the kingdom of heaven.

Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and I ask you right now to come into my life and be my personal Lord and Saviour. I repent of my sins and will worship you all the days of my life. Because Your word is truth I confess with my mouth that I am born again and cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
